Journal #07 Podcasting

In exploring the Classroom 2.0 website I focused on Podcasting ( Personal On Demand broadCASTING ). I know that many people have an IPOD but I can’t really say I know exactly what it is, what it did and why would a person want one. In selecting Podcasting I discovered Podcasting is a term used to describe “…a collection of technologies for automatically distributing audio and video programming over the internet. Podcasting enables independent producers to create and self-publish syndicated ‘Radio Shows”. The “syndicated Radio shows” are downloads ,through “..web feeds, to a portable media player and personal computers..” This same content can be made available by “…direct download or streaming…” This media is digital in nature. In the beginning I had a suspicion that Podcasting had to do with audio but I later learned it can be “..enhanced…” by the words and pictures of a web site.
Reading the “PODCASTING -WHERE DO I START ” Classroom 2.0 discussion along with several threads I discovered Podcasting requires several tools: a computer with internet connection , a microphone ( many say this is the single most important piece of equipment), a Handheld Digital voice recorder that converts the voice into ie MP3 files that the computer can read ( ie IPOD) and a sound editing software (ie Audacity).
Some possible classroom applications of Podcasting could include “…students read and review literature books, write and record poetry/essays, create current event analysis Podcast or post and respond to questions of other students around the world..”

JOURNAL # 6A Software Review- Inspiration

The Inspiration software can be a wonderful tool whether you are an English Instructor or a Science Instructor but you have to use it. The application reminded me of “ web mapping”, a technique used mainly in English classes for creating composition and it is definitely suited for that purpose. The more I reviewed the Inspiration information and analyzed my use of this tool the more I realized the power in this software for virtually any subject. Once I understood the mechanics of this program (it was relatively easy but there is a learning curve) I began to understand how helpful and useful Inspiration will be in creating and constructing a composition, a lesson plan or analyzing a science project. I believe this would be an easy program for students to learn and an asset to their learning tools. The cost of $69 seems very reasonable for a program of this caliber and nature.
Inspiration can be another useful teaching tool for math. A math concept must be illustrated in a visual format for students (especially for myself). An example that would be very useful to students could be outlining the basic concept of the number system as: numbers to natural numbers to whole numbers to integers to rational numbers to irrational numbers to imaginary numbers. Writing this down is helpful but if it could be illustrated visually with Inspiration a student could readily see the relationships between all numbers. This is a simple example but an important beginning to understanding the number system. Another example where Inspiration could be useful would be in illustrating a math concept as “completing the square” for a quadratic equation. Although a verbal explanation may suffice a “Concept Map” would be much more useful in understanding this procedure.
I did not use Atomic Learning with the Inspiration Software. I just jumped in and was able to piece it together with trial and error. My learning curve wasn’t to bad but after exploring the Atomic Learning website I believe my learning curve could have been shorten. I did use Atomic Learning for Imovie.

JOURNAL # 6B IMOVIE ’08 SOFTWARE REVIEW

The Imovie software is a fantastic tool and it I know it will become one of my favorite tools. I had previously worked with the Imovie software in the 422c class but this was with a team of 3. The other 2 members were more familiar with the application and I simply followed along hoping to learn something. I thought I had learned enough to be able to apply my knowledge in 422b and complete the 1 minute-video assignment with little difficulty. I was wrong. I tried to follow the instructor’s instructions as best I could but still I struggled. After several hours I felt I was beginning to understand the Imovie format and eventually got to the point I was producing a video. However, I did not back it up, lost it and really couldn’t remember how I arrived at my point of “ destruction”. The time was running short and decided to pack it up and complete this assignment at home on my wife’s new IMAC desktop. I immediately realized I was working on a completely different Imovie version as compared to the class version. I was at the beginning of my learning curve. After about 15 hours of trail and error, Atomic Learning tutorials and Apple Support tutorials I finally completed a 1 minute-video. I don’t believe I included all class requirements but decided to submit it. Even though this took me forever to complete I thoroughly enjoyed working with Imovie and believe it to be a great learning tool. One cannot beat the price of $0 if you have a MAC but I believe students would enjoy it as much as I did.
The Imovie application could be very useful in a math class. I would video class lessons and place them on a blogsite so students could review and refer to a visual lesson presentation for further study and clarification of a math concept. These videos could be considered “ tutorial videos”.
I was totally lost in using this newer version of Imovie ‘08. I did utilize the Atomic Learning website and found it helpful. However, the Imovie ’08 tutorials were very limited and I relied more on the Apple Computer Support website. In addition I used a lot of trial and error. Although frustrating I was very happy with my final “ cut” and will do more.

Video Project Reflection

Video Project Reflection

I found the video project to be one of the most interesting projects I have been involved with. I never realized how much effort goes into creating a script, devising venues and locations to shoot the video and making decisions amongst 3 people to create a simple video. Although it was frustrating at times the teamwork and teamplay was fun and we all were happy with our results even though they may not have met all the instructors criteria. I plan on delving into this medium much more because I believe its can be one of the more important learning / instructing technological mediums available to teachers and students not to mention it was plain fun.

Attendance and Participation (422C)

Since beginning the 422 series I have began to realize how important technology is in classroom instruction and presentation. Today’s student appears to be more conditioned and aware of the learning modes of sight and sound. The computer, ipods, wei’s, and other handheld electronic devices are everyday devices for them as the 8 track tape
was to me at their age. To be a teacher today it is imperative that one become technological savy and adept at presenting materials via technology. The fact is that it will make instruction easier and more easily perceived by today’s students.

The portion of the 422 C class I thoroughly enjoyed, though I found it complicated at fist, was learning to use the Imovie program. It was very enjoyable to work with other students and produce a short video. One does not realize how much preparation goes into a simple production but the results can be very satisfying and the impact of a video can be very powerful to today’s students. It will take much more practice to become adept at this process but when I do I believe I will utilize this Imovie program for possible homework help, online instruction and math process clarification.

Attendance & Participation

Ed 422A has been quite an experience for me. Prior to starting this class I thought I had a pretty good grip on the computer. That was short lived. I soon discovered how limited my abilities were and was thrown immediately into confusion. I barely know I use a PC but when we started using a MAC I knew I was in trouble. However, overtime and with compassion and help from several students and Mr. Jeff Heil , our instructor, I was able to struggle through and actually began to get somewhat comfortable. This is not to say I became over confident and thoroughly knowledgeable but at least I was able ( albeit –very late) to complete the assignments.

The information I have gained in this class has been very valuable and I know whether I ever get to use it in a classroom or not I will use this in knowledge in my everyday life. Word is a very valuable program to me. Learning to use word art, create text boxes, and place clip art will add some fun and creativity to letters. Learning about bookmarking and the website Delicious.com will come in handy and knowing about it allow me to access favorite websites wherever I am. The blogging section has opened up avenues for discussion for me and I can create a blog to display my wifes artwork. She has been wondering how to do this for sometime.

Perhaps my favorite was learning to use Power Point. I have been substituting in high schools and already I have been able to apply my gained knowledge in Power Point when a teacher left her lesson plans in a Power Point format. Although it took me forever ( as you know) to create my presentation it was the subject I enjoyed most. I can see how useful this can be in a classroom and/or in a business situation. Power Point can make for a more interesting and enjoyable experience for the presenter and for the audience. I will use this tool most.

Journal 05

Christensen & Horn , C (2008).Disrupting Class: Student-Centric Education Is the Future. Edutopia. August 08,

The article “Disrupting Class “ explains that “…the key to transforming the classroom with technology is in how it is implemented.” The mere presence of computers in a classroom does not always mean learning is going on. Typical computer applications are not always beneficial or understood by learners but “… a disruptive innovation extends its benefits to people who, for one reason or another, are unable to consume the original product…” Disruptive Innovations is defined as a product ( e.g. computer application) “…that is not as good as that which companies are already selling..” but “..take root in simple, undemanding applications..” and because of their simplicity benefit more people who were unable to “…consume the original product-so called non-consumers.” Since disruptive innovations is simpler it can be used to better “…implement computer-based learning in a way that transforms the classroom into a student-centric one…”
At first this article appeared nonsensical to me. How can disrupting a class be the future of education. Upon reading further I began to understand that “Disrupting Class” meant companies often accidental development of simpler computer products often not as good as the original may “… implement computer based learning in a way that transforms the classroom into a student- centric one…” These disruptive innovations can
improve the way “…students learn.”

1. Is computer based learning as reliable as classroom instruction?
This may depend on the students themselves. As there are different modes of learning( e.g. tactile, audio, visual.. etc.) the computer alone may not offer the best learning method for a student. It certainly can be another tool but many students would like actual teacher-student contact. Perhaps a combination of the two would better serve a students learning environment.

2. Would smaller classes be more beneficial to the “ non-consumers”?
Online learning is an innovative instructional method but to really reach those “non-consumers” I believe an actual classroom with lower teacher-student ratios
could be more beneficial. Individual attention with immediate teacher-student feedback , I believe, is the most effective method of instruction. Primarily this would apply to grades K-12. College level students , however, should be able to
manage Online Instruction without difficulty.

Villano , M (2008).Text Unto Others..As You Would Have Them Text Unto You. The Journal . Sept 2008

Being a responsible citizen can be epitomized by the Golden Rule: Treat others, as you want to be treated. Mr.Villano’s article carry’s this intention into the new world of virtual
reality. As in the real world we know it is better to be cooperative, to be tolerant and treat others with respect. Today more students are spending their time in the virtual world and “...school districts are starting to acknowledge a new collective responsibility: to teach kids what it means to be a good digital citizen and how to go about being one.” There are 9 elements discussed “... which combine to constitute good digital citizenship”: Etiquette, Communication, Literacy, Access, Commerce, Law, Rights and Responsibilities, Health and Wellness and Security.
It would seem apparent that anyone participating in “virtual realty” would have the common sense to treat people with respect, act with common courtesy and understand that ”...if something isn’t yours, don’t take it. If you aren’t sure, err on the side of caution.” However, as in the real world, social conduct must be taught for the virtual world and there must be consequences if violations occur. We all would like to enjoy and feel safe in the real world as well as the virtual world.

1. Is the immediate family more responsible for teaching social conduct in the virtual world?
The immediate family is the first line of defense for social behavior whether it be in the real world or virtual world. A responsible parent would understand their obligations to society as to their own conduct and to their child’s conduct. Many parents are not acquainted with this virtual world but they can learn it. Life is a continuum of education. However, we know there are irresponsible parents. Consequently, in that instance the community can serve as an adjunct (e.g. schools) to assist in developing a child/student’s social conduct and behavior.
It may take more than the parent.

2. How can Educators in the classroom be of assistance?
Teachers can establish protocols in there own classroom as to when electronic devices can be used. Is it appropriate for students to listen to music
when taking a test? Text messaging in class? Talking on cell phones? Using a laptop computer in class to take notes? Educators must have rules of behavior. They can be flexible but there must be guidance and appropriate behavioral
conduct that serves the class.

Journal 03

Greenhow, C (2008).Who Are Today's Learners? Learning & Leading. Sept/Oct 2008, 12-15.

What engages Middle Grade Students to achieve in school and how do they view technology? A random sample of approximately 4000 North Carolina middle-school students who participated in a “...statewide after-school program...” was conducted to determine what they liked best in school. After answering questions “..about technology conditions, skills, and use for communication, collaboration, productivity, and entertainment…” it was found the majority of students were proficient in word processing , spreadsheets and Power Point and “…ranked using computers and doing internet research as the school activities they liked best.” Students made several suggestions to Educators which included a need for more technologies for learning, more portable technologies as wireless connectivity and “…loosening up some of the technology restrictions.”
The education field has conducted extensive research in the fields of learning and teaching technique. One reliable research activity appears to be staring Educators right in the face; asking the students themselves. Today’s students are comfortable and very proficient with technology. Technology is a means to connecting and reaching them.

1. Are students technology interests to narrow and limited?
It doesn’t matter whether or not a students technology interests are to narrow
( e.g. iphone, emailing….etc) or not they still have the feel and interest in technology. Throughout their schooling career students have been exposed to technology and have developed a propensity for it. It is not so foreign to them that they would be afraid to attempt new adventures.

2. Who really are today’s learners?
Although students have a ways to go in learning about the world I am definitely still learning about technology. I may have some knowledge but I am very limited. To catch up to them in using text messaging, social networks, gaming it
is I who am the true learner. I, myself, must put more effort into this if not more than today’s middle or high school students.

Journal #2

Groff & Haas, J (2008).WEB 2.0 Today's Technologies, Tomorrow's Learning . Learning & Leading. Sept/Oct 2008, 12-15.

The computer has tremendous potential to be a teaching and learning tool. The younger generation (e.g. 18 years and younger) is very adept at using the computer for fun and games as for Social Networking , Simulations and Digital Games. Consequently, the critical question for Educators is “How can I tap into this interest and apply it to teaching and learning?” A logical step is for the Educator to explore these computer applications, learn how to use them and devise connections between the student’s interest and academic education.
Through the availability of computer applications like NING, Starlogo TNG, Explore Science and games like Diplomacy and in conjunction with knowledgeable colleagues Educators can learn to connect with their students on their level . Per Fitzgerald and Scheintaub “..students gain deeper conceptual knowledge, and they understand the content better.” An Educator would bring a “highly engaging “ technology which would be student-friendly. Scheintaub stated “ by bringing school into the modern era ,they like it and relate to it.”
The computer offer’s both pro’s and con’s . With proper “netiquette” there can be no greater learning tool but by abusing time with the computer, like the television, it can be a time waster and detriment to actual learning.

1. How can I tap into students computer interests and apply it to teaching and learning?
One of the first questions an educator might ask of a student is “ What do you use the computer for?” By discovering the students interests an educator can then begin learning the applications and seek out advice from computer resource personnel to begin to learn possible applications. An Educator can utilize what is already available and working for other educators.

2. What computer application could easily be used now?
One of the less complicated application could be Windows Power Point. An Educator could provide notes and additional examples and subject support on a Power Point presentation placed on a blog or school website accessible by students. A Frequent Question and Answers category could be setup so students could ask questions but other students could answer the questions for extra credit.

Introducing Richard H.

Hello, my name is Richard and I am in the 422A course taught by Professor Jeff Heil. Believe it or not I am a native Californian born and raised in Escondido, California. I hate to admit it but I am 58 years old and am returning to college in pursuit of a second career. I attended Felicita Elementary school in Escondido up until 4th grade then upon our family moving to the southeast side of Escondido I completed the 5th and 6th grades at Juniper Elementary School. It was anticipated I would attend Grant Junior High ( today know as a middle school) located in the northern part of the town but a new junior high was built on the westside and since I lived in that district , the Del Dios District, I attended the 7th and 8th grade at Del Dios Junior High. Upon graduating I was on to high school to Escondido High School or so I thought. A new high school was completed in Escondido called Orange Glen High School. The district lines were once again redrawn and most of the friends I made at Del Dios went to Escondido High but I went Orange Glen ( bummer-I thought). At Orange Glen I made many friends and acquaintances . Since I was very involved in athletics one of my highlights at OGHS was defeating the powerhouse Escondido High Cougar football team. This was the very first time we competed against eachother. The team went on to become CIF San Diego County football champions. This was 1968. I enjoyed athletics but was not a bigtime college athelete so I decided to attend Palomar Junior College in San Marcos , California and participated in both football and baseball. I completed my freshman and sophomore years at Palomar J.C. and received a baseball-football scholarship to Southern Colorado State College in Pueblo,Colorado ( now USC- University of Colorado. I use this as a joke sometime because the school has changed its name to USC- University of Southern Colorado. I graduated with a BA in Mathematics. After Pueblo I came back to California and enrolled at San Diego State, San Diego,California to take some courses for the fun of it .I stayed for 1 year then decided to enroll in a Teacher Credential program at USIU, San Diego, California. I nearly completed the full year but had to drop out. I knew teaching was where I wanted to be but became involved in the the real estate business/market for 30+ years and am now returning.

Although I enjoy working with technology I have very limited time with it. I currently work on a PC with Microsoft XP and Office ( I believe) 02 .I use the email quite a bit, search the internet for information , work with word processing and have explored some excel and power point. However, I am not confident on the latter two. In using WORD I have made some brochures and flyers. I am not a "gadget" person and probably will not get an IPOD. I do download music, however, but just keep it on my computer or burn a copy of CD for my personal use. I realize the fantastic potential of technology and I do want to learn to use it more for my personal use and especially for classroom activities.

What stood out to me when I read The Mission Statement were the words collaboratively, thoughtful educators and life-long learning. Though the focus of this statement is on students this statement touches everyone. We all as human beings need each other to grow , improve, develop, learn ...you name it we are in this together. We all need to find common ground and cooperate to transform our society. We must all be committed to bettering our way of like and it is a constant and life-long endeavor. If we as teachers and citizens of this earth can understand this " shared governance" and relay this to students there is a wonderful future out there for all of us.
to transform
